Ithaca ?C For Hartford to harbor any realistic chance of upsetting No. 2 seed Cornell Saturday night at Schoellkopf Field, Tim Fallon needed to exceed his advanced billing.
The Hawks?? face-off man came into the game owning a 63 percent winning percentage at the X. Hartford coach Peter Lawrence figured Fallon needed to win more than 70 percent of his draws to discourage Cornell, statistically ranked the nation??s second-best offense.
But on Saturday, Doug Tesoriero had something to say about that.
Cornell??s freshman face-off specialist overcame a shaky start before dominating Fallon at the X to close out the first half. That meant plenty of possession time for the Big Red, which used it to dispose of visiting Hartford, 12-5, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
In doing so, Cornell (14-2) increased its current winning streak to a national-best 11 straight and earned the right to play the winner of Sunday afternoon??s Virginia vs. Bucknell first-round game. The NCAA quarterfinal game takes place next Saturday at noon in Hofstra??s James Shuart Stadium.
??All week, coach just kept telling us how good this face-off guy is,?? said Tesoriero, who won 10-of-19 draws Saturday. ??So my mindset was not to psyche myself out. Just go in there, do my job, make it a scrap or win it to myself.??
??They??re very aggressive and their wings played great,?? Fallon said. ??But what it came down to was No. 16 (Tesoriero) had a great game.??
Attackman David Lau led the Big Red Saturday with four goals; Rob Pannell had two goals and two assists. Hartford goalie Scott Bement, busy with 44 Cornell shots, made 16 saves.
Hartford, riding Fallon??s early success at the X, raced out to a 3-1 lead against Cornell. Fallon won three of his first four draws and on one of those occasions pushed the ball out front, sprinted to the Cornell cage and fired low on AJ Fiore.
But slowly and surely, Tesoriero solved the America East face-off terror.
Tesoriero won six of seven draws to close out the first half and Cornell, predictably, knew how to capitalize on those possessions.
Lau resembled a running back picking his way toward the end zone as he dodged through a series of defenders and scored on Bement, a native of Canandaigua who came home to face the Big Red in Hartford??s first-ever NCAA Tournament game. Cornell scored the next four goals to finish the first half, the final one a leaping, spinning gem by Pannell, who extended his points streak to 51 consecutive games.
The Big Red led 7-3 at intermission. Hartford never got closer.
Cornell??s defense made sure of that.
The Hawks, like a lot of Cornell opponents this season, learned how difficult it is to play 6-on-6 against the Big Red. After Carter Bender scored Hartford??s third goal with 12:53 left in the first period, the Hawks failed to register another goal until Aidan Genik scored unassisted with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. That??s a nearly 42 minute Hawks?? scoring drought.
Cornell, a team that limited top-seeded Syracuse to six goals when the two Upstate powers met on April 12, has allowed an average of six goals in its last six games.
??They pressure out a lot,?? said Bender, ??and they??re always on your hands.??
